Des de l’època medieval fins a l’entrada del 2010, ens hem mirat l’anglès per sobre, per sota, per davant, per darrere, per la dreta i per l’esquerra, i fins i tot hem vist quin anglès parlaven les bèsties (woof-woof!). (*)

Però una llengua –qualsevol llengua- no s’acaba mai, perquè té infinites facetes, i, si agafeu afició a jugar amb les paraules, us garanteixo diversió per tota la vida. (I ja no us dic res si, en comptes d’una llengua, jugueu amb dues o més: com més llengües, més divertit.)

Si bé el plural de foot és feet (per exemple: this ladder is ten feet long –aquesta escala fa deu metres) quan s’aplica a l’alçada d’una persona i la diem en peus (feet) i polzades (inches), la paraula “peus” en anglès sempre es diu en singular (o sigui “foot,” no “feet”).

Així, per dir que la jugadora “fa dos metres i un centímetre” diríem: she is six foot, seven inches tall (o bé six foot seven) -que s’abrevia 6’ 7”.

Now, a little task for the weekend: can you calculate your height in feet and inches –and let me know the result? I am curious...

OK, the mystery is solved.

I know who left me a load of coal yesterday: it was not the Three Wise Men, but somebody else.

Somebody who is jealous of the Three Wise Men and who thinks that I, being English, should not get presents from such non-English characters as the Three Wise Men. No deu considerar els Reis prou anglesos i deu pensar que sóc un traidor! No res, enveja i gelosia.

Us diré com vaig descobrir el culpable.

Last night, just before going to bed, I was looking at the load of coal wondering who the culprit might be. Suddenly I heard a faint noise outside my window. I got up quickly, opened it... and there he was!

Guess what the name of the culprit was?

Santa Claus, of course!

Vaig tenir temps just per enxampar-lo mirant-me amb una rialleta perversa, just abans que sortís disparat cel enllà damunt del seu trineu.

Sort que encara em dura l’esperit nadalenc i m’he quedat tan ample: he tirat el carbó a l’estufa i el mitjó a la rentadora.

I tot mirant-me el mitjó he pensat que també us hauria d’explicar que, semblantment a les unitats de pes, volum i llargària, les mesures dels peus són diferents a Europa, a Anglaterra... i als Estats Units!

(Bé, les mesures dels peus no són diferents, vull dir que el que són diferents són els números de les sabates.)

This is what I found this morning in my sock (el mitjó que havia deixat penjat a la barana del balcó). Un pilot de carbó.

I don’t understand, I have been a good boy all year long. I just can’t believe it!

Mmmm... There must be a reason for it. No pot ser que els Reis m’hagin portat carbó. M’ensumo que algú altre m’ha volgut fer una mala passada...

La pista que us donava ahir per identificar la “recipe for cooking pasta” com a anglesa o americana estava en la manera d’expressar el pes i el volum. Hi deia: “...4 to 6 quarts of water for one pound of dry pasta.”

Now “quarts” and “pounds” are NOT metric measures. (One quart is a little less than one liter, and one pound is a little less than half a kilogram.)

Si bé el sistema mètric decimal s’ha adoptat en molts àmbits de la vida a la Gran Bretanya, (sobretot entre els científics), no sempre ha estat així. I encara menys als Estats Units!

Until not so long ago, Catalans also used “unces” and “lliures” for weighing food: “doni’m tres unces de fuet,” or “posi’m mitja lliura de mongetes cuites”. That’s what people said in the old days.

I no era pas perquè sí: tres unces (= 100 grams) de fuet donaven per fer dos entrepans (si només en volies fer un, en demanaves "una unça i mitja"); i mitja lliura de mongetes cuites (una lliura = 400 grams) era la ració per a una persona per acompanyar una botifarra a la brasa -per exemple.

O sigui que es tractava d’una manera còmoda d’anar a comprar.

In short: if you travel to English-speaking countries you’ll very probably have to use your calculator to convert English or Amercan units into metric units.

De fet, els sistemes de mesura no mètrics són més complicats que no pas el sistema mètric decimal, sobretot si tenim en compte que les unitats britàniques no són exactament iguals a les unitats americanes!

En resum, que si jo fos els Reis d’Orient, als que s’entesten a mantenir sistemes de mesura no mètrics aquesta nit els hi portaria... carbó!

Anyway, I hope you do not get any coal from the Three Wise Men (així és com es solen anomenar els Reis d’Orient en anglès, Els Tres Savis) but, instead, a lot of fantastic presents!

A mi, de moment em tracta prou bé, però... per si les mosques, toquem fusta! (We say the same in English: “touch wood!”)

By the way, did you eat the traditional twelve grapes at the stroke of midnight on December 31st? Or perhaps you don’t follow this tradition?

De fet. els anglesos no ens mengem ni grans de raïm ni res d’especial la nit de Cap d’Any; aixó sí, els brindis, que no hi faltin!

And speaking of eating and drinking, have you had the occasion to cook some pasta since I gave you that recipe on the New Year’s post? This was the recipe:




Llegint-la, es pot deduir fàcilment que es tracta d’una recepta anglesa (o americana). Però no pas perquè estigui escrita en anglès.

You can tell it’s not a European recipe for a different reason. But can you tell what that is?

Farfalle (the word I was asking you about in yesterday’s post) is the Italian word for “butterfly”.

Pasta is so popular among kids –and grown-ups- from all over the world that I’ll bet you know more about pasta than I do. And I’m sure you’re all experts at eating pasta.

But the question is: do you know how to cook pasta properly?

Just in case, here is a good recipe(*) for cooking pasta:

And talking about spaghetti, English also has quite a few Italian words.

De fet, l’anglès té una facilitat especial per adaptar i incorporar paraules d’altres llengües. (Remember the lists of French and Japanese words I gave you in past posts?)

Però, a part de les paraules directament italianes que han entrat a formar part de l’anglès –sobretot les relacionades amb la música (“piano”, “cello”, “opera”, “orchestra”...) i amb el menjar, com ara “pizza”, “pasta” (amb totes les seves variants) n’hi ha unes quantes que, malgrat l’aparença genuïnament anglesa, són adaptades de l’italià.

For instance: sketch, saloon, cartoon and... jeans!

“Sketch” ve de schizzo (=dibuix, croquis), “saloon” (com els del Far West) & “cartoon” (=dibuix animat) vénen de salone i cartone, respectivament, i... jeans (=texans, sovint anomenats “blue jeans”) ve de “blu di Genova” (el “blau de Gènova”, que és un tint, precisament el que originàriament donava el color blau dels texans tan característic).

Us deixo amb una mica de pasta –que no són macarrons- però que segur que deveu conèixer. I a part de la mica de pasta per menjar, també us deixo una mica de “pasta” per gastar... he, he!

I ara el que us vaig prometre ahir: la innocentada que va fer per la televisió la BBC (probablement el canal de televisió més formal, seriós i imparcial del món) l’ú d’abril de 1957, és a dir, el Dia dels Innocents (April Fool’s Day) d’ara fa 52 anys.

Us la descric breument: van donar la notícia que aquell any al Ticino (el cantó italià de Suïssa) la collita d’espaguetis havia estat extraordinària.
